Reggie’s trusted advisors advised him not to take the job at Nintendo

Reggie Fils-Aime is internationally known as the President of Nintendo of America. A position he almost didn’t accept because his most trusted advisers advised him not to accept the position.

Reggie spent 15 years at Nintendo, including more than a decade as president. A position that Doug Bowser has held for over 2 years now.

His time in the company was marked by a life full of successes, memories and many memes. Who would have thought that this almost didn’t happen.

But why did Reggie almost not agree to work at Nintendo of America? Well, that’s what the manager recently revealed himself.

He decided to share this information during a presentation at SXSW 2022. When asked why his advisors spoke and felt that way, Reggie says:

“Working for a Japanese parent company can be very challenging, such as cultural differences and the approach to the business.

The other reason for this perspective was that Nintendo was criticized at the time for its way of doing business by Sony with its PlayStation and by Microsoft,” he said, coming from Nintendo Everything.

“As a result, I was advised not to take the job, but I saw something different. I saw an opportunity. I saw that the company had a legacy of innovation.

All the things that are taken for granted in video game consoles today – joysticks, directional pads – Nintendo did it first.”

After pondering these and a few other questions, he settled on Nintendo. Reggie says something during the conversation that has been said on other occasions.

And so, upon his arrival, he asked to meet the late Satoru Iwata. Although it was a bit out of character and almost cost him his job, he then felt it was necessary to have a good relationship with him and with Shigeru Miyamoto.

It wasn’t until 2006 that he became president of Nintendo of America. After all those years on the ship, he announced his retirement from the company in April 2019.

He has often spoken about the success of the Nintendo Switch. Specifically, a special quote: “The day I sat down with Iwata, I knew it was going to be magical.”

A few years ago I said not to rule out the Nintendo 64 Mini, although that’s not going to happen any time soon.
